This is an artwork that uses art to stir human emotions and call for action. The steel pillars towering overhead appear to “grow” among the sequoias, their cold, black, industrial feel forming a stark contrast to the living vegetation around them. A vision of the disappearance of natural life under the onslaught of human civilization, they summon awareness of the need to preserve the environment of Lake Dian. The mirrored, “zig-zag” bridge reflects the unique brilliant blue of the Kunming sky as it snakes between the towering steel pillars. This color forms the deepest memories for people in Kunming. This is a path laden with nostalgia, leading to a beautiful future. Through this artwork, the artist hopes his hometown of Kunming can be truly transformed into a clean, green homeland for all
Since the 1990s, Zhang Xiaogang has employed a cold, reserved, daydream-like artistic style to convey collective memories and sentiments marked by the times. This paradoxical expression and simulation of society, the collective, the individual, family, and kinship is a powerful contemporary rehashing from the perspectives of art, emotions, and life, the contemporary embodiment of the Chinese predicament. His works have been featured in such major Chinese and international exhibitions as the Bienal de São Paulo, the Gwangju Biennale, the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, and the Shanghai Biennale, and he has held solo exhibitions at museums and important institutions around the world.
