When our lines of sight are filled with large plants, do we stop to notice the world floating in the water? The floating aquatic plants in the microscopic world are not only the most important elemental producers in the aquatic ecosystem, they are also the main providers of dissolved oxygen in the water. They catalyze the food chain in aquatic ecosystems. Some of them are ancient species that predate even plants. In this contradiction between extreme smallness and extreme ancientness, the artist employs a method of magnifying algae cells to alert the viewer to the existence of another dimension beyond the everyday.
Long Pan was born in 1991. She received an MFA from the China Academy of Art Department of Intermedia Art in 1991, and currently lives and works in Yichun. Long Pan is fascinated by the traces of human activity in organisms, and seeks out threads of greater connections between things on the microscopic level. She often uses plants, fungi and other organisms as creative material. In her recent creations, she has employed “plant alchemy”, “fungal biodegradation” and other biological technologies as creative methods. These non-human life forms and interdisciplinary technologies have come to form the cornerstone of her artistic creations.
