“Stone cats” are guardian figures found scattered throughout the villages on the eastern shore of lake Dian. They can be found at the south end of virtually every village in the area. During the urban transformation of the past twenty years, many villages have been wiped out, but the stone cats are often the last vestiges to remain. In this artwork, these gods have been re-crafted using various materials and given a home among the trees. In a land being disenchanted by new forms of logic, certain forms once bestowed with meaning are being preserved in this new way. In the name of art, they now stand here, waiting to be discovered, waiting to capture a new gaze.
