In legend and myth, ladders to the sky often take the form of mountains or giant trees. The ladder is an everyday implement. When it enters art and literature, it often carries a wealth of cultural information and aesthetic implications: its feet are on the ground, while its hands reach up to the sky, as if chasing dreams. These hands reaching up to the sky are children’s hands. This is childhood. A wonderful childhood can provide people with light and energy in their adult lives, but most people spend their lives healing their childhood trauma. As we climb these ladders to the sky, we realize that the real objective is not the one we were seeking, but the climb itself. When it comes to the trajectory of an individual life, it is just a passage. There is no reason to rejoice in heights, or to lament lows. In the end, we all return to the flat ground, and must face everything on a level field.
