Fan Rui, a Ming dynasty poet, once wrote a poem about Lake Dian that created complex, interwoven connections between the vegetation, the water, the sky, and the emotions of the people, creating a powerful abstract expression of harmonious coexistence between people and nature. When I was invited to take part in this local art festival, and visited Laoyuhe for the first time, I saw this great number of American cypress trees planted here to clean up the environment, I had the idea to use a tree to capture the ancient imagery of a “northwards current against the southwards flow,” thus creating my own expression of the inspiration drawn from life, nature, and change.
