Benjamin Puah | Man & Bird (Nature taught me about the balanced life)
Singapore

This work was prompted by my experience at Dianchi in Kunming China, although this work is not about a geographic location but rather a state of mind or being. The site on Dianchi was surrounded by mountains, meadows, forests, animals and pure tranquility which is a complete contrast to the city life to which I am accustomed.

I feel a deep sadness when I see, hear and read about what is happening to our environment, especially the destruction and loss of our natural world, and now our own existence is question as the destruction is making an impact on our lives. Our natural world is no longer a pretty picture, we are destroying it and we don’t even see it.

Can we bring back the beauty of nature?

In this deeply personal sculpture, Ben Puah responds to what he sees as the relationship between Man & Nature, fraught with energy and vitality but also with undercurrents of tensions and conflicts. All of us occupy the same space, and are in a dynamic interaction with each other. We are part of nature. We need to flow with it.

Ben Puah

Ben Puah is an exciting figure in a new breed of contemporary Asian artists.

Born in Singapore in 1976, Ben studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and LASALLE College of the Arts. He received his BFA with Distinction from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2000. He is also the recipient for the President’s Young Talents in 2001.

Art is very important to Ben because it is a way of expressing oneself and an abstraction of how he feels about life. His works are like in the state of phantasmagoria where there is a mix of real and imagined elements.

Ben has exhibited his works in Singapore, Iran, Australia, Germany, Japan, USA, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, London, Malaysia, China and Philippines. His works are collected by private individuals and public institutions; including Singapore Art Museum, National Institute of Education(Singapore), Vietnam Fine Art Association and Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (Singapore).
