Haiyan Village Snail Factory--Beiqiu Exhibition Hall
Since the first discovery of Heboso Site in the 1950s, decades of archaeological work has gradually unveiled the appearance and history of ancient Dian Kingdom since the Bronze Age.The people living here in ancient times worked, fished and hunted by Dianchi Lake, and used the lake to catch snails for food, then discarded the shells. After thousands of years, these shells gradually accumulated and formed the Snail Hill. These seemingly humble snails are unique to Yunnan's highland lakes with deep water or wide surface, represented by margarya melanioides, margarya monodi and margarya oxytropoides, which were excavated in large quantities in the Beiqiu Hill Site.
Snails have been eaten since the origin of ancient human civilization in Yunnan, with a history of 1.7 million years. As the most easily available high-nutritional food, it has become an important food material for the aborigines. The history of eating snails is also the history of the development of ancient Yunnan civilization. In the middle and late period of the last century, snails began to fade from people's diet, but as a commercial species, it is still widely used for making fodder and as a brick material for building adobe houses. In the past two decades, due to industrial and agricultural pollution, urban sewage, invasive alien species, and excessive development around the lake, the native species of snail in Dianchi Lake has been endangered, and it is hard to see the trace of snail in daily life.
The new exhibition hall uses the original site of the snail factory in Haiyan Village, which is transformed into the Beiqiu installation art exhibition hall. The shells of the deep-buried snail shells are dug up and piled into a shell mound. It is not known how long it takes for them to return to the Dianchi Lake again -- the shell mound, Dianchi Lake and Xishan Mountain overlap in front of us. When the audience is on the scene, it is like stepping into a space connecting time -- the ancient people's life and culture appear while also triggering today's reflection on the ecology of Dianchi Lake and the future of our common habitat.
Founded in Kunming, ELEPHENO Studio has been rooted in Yunnan for many years. We draw nutrients from local culture and natural life, and constantly explore a more "good" design philosophy through construction practice as the main medium. Fortunately, in Yunnan dialect, it can refer to both the state of people and the comfort of the place. The "good" place, the "daily" poetry, and the "eternal" spirit, we pay attention to them and believe that they can bring people to a better state. The unique scenery and diverse regionalism of Yunnan are the basis for our creation. We think about architecture and sincerely express through construction, so that everyone can see how locality grows and changes in Yunnan. The design practice and academic research of the studio have been published in academic journals and professional media such as Architectural Journal, Scroll Wallpaper, Sanlian Life Weekly, archdaily, gooood, and one. It won the special project award of the jury of "2023 Natural Construction Award" and was shortlisted for the second "Sanlian Humanistic City Award". Some of the works were invited to participate in "In the Field · Yunnan Traditional Architecture Research Exhibition", "Shenzhen-Hong Kong Biennale", "Shanghai Biennale" and other exhibitions.
