I first saw Dianchi Lake, it was quite foggy with some dim shapes of distant mountains. From the shore of Haiyan Village, the mountains are described as a sleeping beauty. For such a legend, I take it as the imagination of generations of Dianchi people and their hopes for a better life. Later I learnt the history between the ancient Dian Kingdom and Dianchi, and the American Volunteer Group (AVG), best known as the Flying Tigers that helped China fight the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. It's said that several of the AVG planes ditched into Dianchi after running out of fuel, or due to the aircraft damage. When I was ready to paint this on spot Kunming painting,I decided to only draw a piece of water in Dianchi. I sat by the lake for a few days, was drinking tea and watching the water. In the morning, the silver gray water ripples were gentle. It was about noon time, the lake water was going green. The ripples at this time were exactly what was painted in the traditional Chinese painting. In the afternoon, thousands of little waves were formed by the wind. At 7 p.m., here was the most astonishing sight of the day: the sunset on the west hills. I stood on the shore of Haiyan Village, I watched it: the sky was composed of vermilion, orange, and a little bit of medium yellow. The reflection in the water was rose - colored lasted for long.
So when I started drawing this picture, I first set a tone on the white screen: the diluted acrylic paints - red, orange, yellow were splashed on the upper part of the canvas, and the yellow green for the lower part. Later, I depicted the water, from far to near, about this part, my painting were black and white. When the paint was completely dry, I used a brush and a grinder to remove some of the black and white paint on the canvas, then the red, orange, orange, and green spots emerged from behind, the colourful light seemd to be given out under the water. I drew a faint face contour in the water, which also answered the history and legends of Dianchi.
