The art works in Dianchi Art Season different from all other art creation, are the result of complicated communication and coordination and cooperation, communication, coordination and cooperation between government departments and departments, superiors and subordinates, government and curator team, curator team and curator team, curator team and curators, curators and curators, curators and artists, artists and artists, artists and staff, staff and staff, artists and villagers, villagers and villagers, etc. (the solitaire can continue,). Each link would have affected the works. When we face a piece of work in this art season, what we see is not the only the creation of the artist. It embodies the painstaking efforts of all the participants in the above links, with the joy of success and the regret of shortcomings.

A Landscape Filled with Poetry

“Fragrant aromas and warm waves waft among the clouds / the water is filled with the sounds of fishermen's oars and woodcutters’ songs. The weather is always like February or March / blossoms and branches blooming in an eternal spring.” Praising the beauty of Lake Dian in his Ode to the Dian Sea, Ming dynasty poet Yang Shen captured the scenery and climate of the area with the words “fragrant aromas and warm waves,” while “sounds of fishermen’s oars and woodcutters’ songs” is a vivid portrait of the lives of the local inhabitants on Lake Dian’s shores. With the line “the weather is always like the second or third month, blossoms and branches in eternal spring,” the poet bestowed Kunming with the name “city of eternal spring.” It is a great joy for the people of Kunming to be able to host the 2023 Dianchi Arts Season on the shores of our mother lake under the theme of “Homeland and Future.” It is my personal honor to be able to serve as curator for the art season's Laoyuhe Wetland Park section. I hope that through the artistic works of these twenty-four participating artists, a new possibility can be created, between homesickness and home, between life and the environment, between art and nature, one which inspires people to join in considering the past and present of Lake Dian. The metamorphosis of the Laoyuhe Wetland Park is a microcosm of the improved environment around Lake Dian. The Wetland Art section of the arts season, centered on Laoyuhe Wetland Park, uses art to kindle compassion and to push the people living around Lake Dian into action, calling on all of society to take part in protecting the lake’s environment. The artists taking part in the Laoyuhe Wetland Park section include artists who have set out from Kunming, such as Zhang Xiaogang, Zeng Xiaofeng, Tang Zhigang, Luo Xu, Liu Jianhua, and Li Ji; artists who came of age in Kunming, such as Cheng Xinhao, Guo Peng, Zhang Hua, Yu Hua, Xue Tao, Zhao Guanghui, Li Donghai, and Lü Lirong; and dynamic young artists based in Beijing, Shanghai, and elsewhere, such as Tong Kunniao, Cao Shuyi, Feng Zhixuan, Yang Xinguang, Hu Weiyi, Zhou Yilun, Wang Ziquan, He Jing, Long Pan, and Nie Xindi. Their works unfold in a landscape filled with poetry, where plants and wetland sequoias come together to form a habitat, and open up multiple dimensions for interpreting nostalgia and homesickness in everyday life.

It is often said that land art festivals are fêtes held in tribute to the land. Unlike other forms of art exhibitions held in Yunnan, the Laoyuhe section of the Dianchi Arts Season is a narrative of everything between the Western Hills and Lake Dian, a joyous celebration for those who live together in this environment. For this reason, we have placed particular emphasis on the creation of “narratives of place.” This is the only way that true connections can be established between the artworks and the environment. Through artistic means, they voice local cultural meaning, and form a true emotional bond with the local people. We also hope that this approach to artistic action can bring with it a form of sustainability, so that this sustained cultural exploration and research can continue to develop in a healthy direction. We look forward to seeing people inspired by the Dianchi Arts Season to truly care about protecting their home, and to look forward to a beautiful future.
