I live by the Dian Lake, in this city of eternal spring called Kunming.

I love this city, every street, garden, leisurely corner and eave. I've often pondered how to express this love. Immersing in the environment Dian Lake has given us this opportunity to discover those stories of local character that are both unfamiliar yet familiar.

More than 60 wetland parks dot the banks of Dian Lake, similar to Laoyu River Park. The Chinese Fir trees that have grown by the lake for decades stand like rows of soldiers, protecting our mother lake. This spectacular scene, between the natural and the unnatural, draws the public for leisure and forms a green bond between Dian Lake and the people of Kunming. Two of the nation’s foremost architects, Liu Jiakun and Liu Yichun, have grounded their first works in Yunnan, on the edge of the forest, along the plazas and roads. With poetic and architecturally beautiful bird-watching towers and forest pavilions, they offer citizens a chance to experience the beauty of nature with different senses. Young architects Gao Changjun and Zhang Feng also present their challenging forest stations for strollers to take brief breaks in the woods. These architectural spaces were created by 24 artists and themed around nature and environmental protection. The architectural spaces integrate with the wetland forest creating a unique 'water forest art gallery.'

Beside Laoyu River wetland lies the most vibrant traditional village on the edge of Dian Lake – Haiyan Village. The beautiful sunset draws a bustling stream of people from the internet to this ancient lakeside village, changing this millennium-old village that stores memories from different eras. Challenges and opportunities coexist, with the theme of "homeland and future" becoming more heartfelt and urgent. The protection and development of the countryside require hard work and commitment to the locals. We have invited the representative of young national architecture, Shui Yanfei, to use the Haiyan Village guesthouse as a basis, using space as a media to explore and reconstruct the village's social network. Local architects Zhang Ziyang and Zhou Shihao, on the other hand, upgraded the abandoned and dilapidated public spaces in the countryside with the least possible modification to the original. The renovated tobacco curing barn designed by Shanghai’s architect Wang Mingbo is also filled with imagination. We hope these works can build a unique picture of Yunnan as a place of “good living”, allowing tourists and villagers to "share" their future homelands.

At the former site of the Kunming World Expo 1999, dozens of renowned landscaping institutions, scenography artists, and architects have been invited to respond to the question posed by this city over 20 years ago, "Human Bing and Nature – Marching into the 21st Century."

The grand event of more than two decades ago brought a shining moment to the Spring City, rendering the city a model for exploring harmonious coexistence of human being and nature. Today, by the Dian Lake, in the forest, let’s express our imagination of what the future will look like in 20 years through the creation of art.
